Etymology: Neofundulus: Greek, neos = new + Latin, fundus = bottom; a peculiar name for a topminnow, coined for a bottom species of Atlantic coast being "the abode of the fundulus mudfish" (Ref. 45335); aureomaculatus: Name from the From the Latin aureomaculatus, meaning with golden spots, in reference to the presence of numerous golden spots on the flank in males.

Found in small and shallow temporary pools about 30 m in its larger length and about 0.5 m depth in deepest places. Collected close to margins, under dense aquatic and amphibious vegetation (Ref. 101435).
