Etymology: Schindleria: Named for ichthyologist Otto Schindler, 1906-1959 (Prof. Dr. Konrad Schindler, pers. comm Dec. 2017)nigropunctata: Name from Lating 'niger' meaning black, and 'punctatus' for spotted; referring to the black melanophores on the body.

Spine dorsali (totale) : 0; Raggi dorsali molli (totale) : 17; Spine anali: 0; Raggi anali molli: 12; Vertebre: 41 - 42. This relatively high-bodied, pigmented species is distinguished by the following characters: body depth at pectoral-fin origin 5-6% of SL, at anal-fin origin 9% SL; predorsal length 53-67% of SL, preanal length 54-67% of SL; dorsal-fin rays 13, anal-fin rays 11 or 12; first dorsal-fin ray at myomere 24, first anal-fin ray below second dorsal-fin ray; myomeres 20 + 21 or 22 = 41 or 42; premaxillae and dentaries with small teeth; gas bladder posteriorly located at 47-49% of SL; males with rod-like, flexible urogenital papilla without lobes, projections or accessory papillae, with the distal half narrow, pointed and usually posteriorly directed (Ref. 116797).
