Perciformes/Cottoidei (Sculpins) >
Liparidae (Snailfishes)
Etymology: Careproctus: Greek, kara = face + Greek, proktos = anus (Ref. 45335); karaensis: Named for its type locality, Kara Sea..
Environment: milieu / climate zone / depth range / distribution range
Ecology
Marine; pelagic-neritic; depth range 0 - 30 m (Ref. 116680). Polar
Arctic: Kara Sea.
Size / Weight / Age
Maturity: Lm ?  range ? - ? cm
Max length : 14.2 cm TL male/unsexed; (Ref. 116680)
Collected by pelagic trawling, 0-30 m above the eastern slope of the Novaya Zemlya Depression (193 m deep); suggesting the pelagic habitat of this species. According to field study, the surface water temperature at the locality was 5-7°C, thermocline was situated at a depth from 20 to 30 m, and water temperature of the whole water mass below up to bottom was negative (-0.6 to -0.7°C), salinity 33.31-34.33 ppt from surface to bottom. Most likely that this species inhabits the layer closely below the thermocline where zooplankton organisms produced large concentration there; that is, in water of negative temperatures (Ref. .116680)
