Etymology: Hypseleotris: Greek, hypselos = high + The name of a Nile fish, eleotris (Ref. 45335); gymnocephala: Name from the Greek words 'gymnos' meaning naked, and 'kephale', Latinized to 'cephalus' meaning head; in reference to the scaleless skin of the forehead, nape and dorsal midline anterior to the 1st dorsal fin (Ref. 128732).

Dorsal spines (total): 8 - 9; Dorsal soft rays (total): 11 - 12; Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 11 - 12; Vertebrae: 30 - 31. This species is distinguished from other southeastern Hypseleotris by the following set of characters: blunt head and lack of dorsal scales up until posteriad as middle of second dorsal fin; absence of pointed median fin tips (present in H. acropinna, H. galii, H. mooloboolaensis); and distinct median fin coloration in mature males: distal portion of fin bearing band of pale orange, shading into thin band of white (Ref. 128732).
