Etymology: Notomuraenobathys: Name from the combination of the words 'notos' for southern and 'bathys' for deep; referring to the life of the type species at bathyal depths of high latitudes of the Southern Ocean.

The body is highly elongated, slender, depth less than 13% SL; 83-85 vertebrae; no anal lateral line; dorsal lateral line highly reduced and represented only by 1-3 tubular scales; infraorbital canal with 9 pores; preopercular-mandibular canal with 10 pores (7 in its mandibular branch, 3 in the preopercular branch) (Ref. 84346).
Dwells on the continental shelf and slope. Feeds on zooplankton.
