Etymology: Gnathanacanthus: Greek, gnathos = jaw + Greek, ana = up + Greek, akantha = thorn (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: J W Goetzee, a friend of the author, discovered the species in Hobart, Tasmania. He sent it with others to Bleeker, warning him how poisonous the fish was to eat. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
