Dorsal soft rays (total): 14 - 16; Anal soft rays: 24 - 25. Differs from all other members of the family by its peculiar duck-bill, overhanging upper jaw, eyes protruding above dorsal profile of head and visible from below. Other diagnostic characters include 14-16 rays in dorsal fin and about 75 scales in lateral row (Ref. 26747).
