Adults occur outside the lagoon, usually in deeper surge channels on the leeward side of reefs in the Capricorn Group, Queensland, Australia. Ubiquitous at Lord Howe Island (Ref. 7247). Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205). Eggs are demersal and adhere to the substrate (Ref. 205). Males guard and aerate the eggs (Ref. 205). Close relative of N. mitratus (Ref. 90102). Diurnal species (Ref. 54980; 113699).
