Oceania: endemic to the upper Prince Regent and upper Roe Rivers, in the northern coastal basin of western Australia.

Adults inhabit clear, flowing streams over sandstone bottoms. Also found in open rocky pools with minimal aquatic vegetation (Ref. 44894). Feed on crustaceans and small fishes (Ref. 5259, 44894) but is considered an omnivore (Ref. 7300). Breeding presumably takes place during the dry season (Ref. 44894). Eggs are guarded and fanned by the male parent (Ref. 205). Not much known on its biology (Ref. 2906). Aquarium conditions: pH=7.8, H=8, 28°C water temperature, egg layer and a peaceful community fish (Ref. 6398).
