Etymology: Pimelodus: Greek, pimele = fat + Greek, odous = teeth (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: Th. Grosskopf collected specimens, including the holotype of this species, in Colombia (1876) for the Berlin Museum. We can find no other reference to him, or even his full forename. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
