South America: Amazon River basin, restricted to Peruvian and adjacent Brazilian black-water river systems (collected in the lower Nanay, Mazán and Tigre in Peru, near Leticia in Colombia, and in Igarapé Preto and Lago Tefé in Brazil).

Grows larger in aquaria, the largest being a male measuring 4.65 cm SL (Ref. 9088). Eggs are deposited on the ceiling of caves and are tendered by the female parent (Ref. 2060).

Produces 40-60 eggs. All Apistogramma species build caves for spawning, the eggs are attached to the ceiling. Female tends the clutch (Ref. 2060).
