Etymology: Bodianus: Bodianus after Bodiano or Pudiano, from the Portuguese pudor, meaning modesty (Jordan & Evermann, 1896); macrourus: Name from the Greek makros for long, and feminine noun oura for tail, referring to the elongate tail depicted in a pencil drawing of this species on which the original description was based (Ref. 75973).

marino associati a barriera corallina; distribuzione batimetrica 10 - 40 m (Ref. 5374), usually 15 - 40 m (Ref. 9710). Tropical
Western Indian Ocean: restricted, Mauritius, Réunion and St. Brandon's Shoals. Records outside this area may be bilunulatus, loxozonus, or perditio (M. Westneat, pers.comm.).

Spine dorsali (totale) : 12 - 13; Raggi dorsali molli (totale) : 9 - 11. Black band encircling body posteriorly oriented vertically in adults, almost as broad below lateral line as above; posterior edge of band not reaching past posterior edge of hypurals ventrally (Ref. 9823).
Adults inhabit exposed seaward reefs with sand patches (Ref. 9710). Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205).
