Adults occur in lentic and lotic freshwater (Ref. 7300). Swim close to the bottom of moderate to swift flowing streams, over rock or sand. Retreat quickly to crevices when threatened (Ref. 44894). Herbivorous species (Ref. 7300). Feed on filamentous algae, scraped from hard surfaces using specially modified dentition. Form shoals, often mixed with S. rastellus (Ref. 44894). Eggs are guarded and fanned by the male parent (Ref. 205).
