First dorsal fin is absent, pelvic fin reduced (Ref. 44253). Full number of second dorsal, anal and pectoral fin rays is attained about two months after fertilization. Body wall is translucent (Ref. 101247). Scales are absent (Ref. 101248).

Adults ascend rivers in the spawning season without feeding, and dies after spawning. Adults retain larval characteristics, a major factor contributing to its neotenic characteristics is the delayed development of the thyroid system (Ref. 101248). Caught for food.
