Africa: Endemic to Lake Malawi. Known only from the type specimens taken from Mwaya, Tanzania and Deep Bay, Malawi.

Prefers shallow sandy areas with the bottom covered partly with small rocks and pebbles. Feeds by turning small stones and checking what is underneath (Ref. 5595).
