Etymology: Mchenga: Name from Chichewa, the indigenous language of Malawi; mchenga (sand), was chosen to indicate the type of bowers constructed by the members of this genus. Gender is feminine.

Diagnosis: 17 gill rakers on first ceratobranchial; premaxillary pedicel 37-40% HL; teeth in outer rows on dentary and premaxilla small and bicuspid (Ref. 57549).
Occurs in inshore areas of the lake, where it is common over wave-washed sandy bottoms, and feeds on zooplankton (Ref. 267). Parental care is provided by mouth-brooding females (Ref. 33611).
