Etymology: Etropus: Greek, etron, -on = lower abdomen + Greek, pous = feet.
Eponymy: Hendricus Christoffel Delsman (1886–1969) was a fisheries biologist. He was Director of the Fishery station in Batavia (Jakarta), Dutch East Indies (Indonesia). He co-wrote: De indische zeevisschen en zeevisscherij (1934). (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Issue
A subspecies is recognized for a long time in the Pacific Ocean Etropus delsmani pacificus Nielsen, 1963, that is recognized in FishBase as a provisionally valid species. More studies are needed to clearly differentiate it (MArch 2021).
