Etymology: Kumba: Named for the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom, whose research vessel Sarsia dredged the type speciesgymnorhynchus: From the Greek word 'gymnos' meaning naked and 'rhynchos' or snout (noun in apposition).

Épines dorsales (Total) : 2. Firm head, not inflated with sensory canals lacking pores. Dorsally scaleless snout extend to lateral nasal angles but not onto the forehead. Orbit diameter about 26% of head length; snout slightly longer than orbit; interorbital about equal to the orbit; upper jaw 40-43% HL; short barbel, about 7% HL. 1D II,10 (Ref. 11651).
