Central America: Cuba. Reported to reach southern Florida from Cuba by crossing the Gulf Stream (Ref. 27148).

Inhabits freshwater ponds, lakes and streams. Prefers stagnant or slow-flowing streams, although may occur in mountain streams at elevation up to 600 m. Usually found in schools close to the shore. Carnivorous surface feeder.
