Etymology: Pseudacanthicus: Greek, pseudes = false + Greek, akantha = thorn (Ref. 45335).

Issue
Original description based on drawings included in an unpublished manuscript by Vandelli; Capello (1870:64, pl. 7) redescribed and figured the holotype (unique specimen acquired in 1786 by Ferreira sent to Lisbon from Barcelos and studied by Vandelli), precised its historic and geographic origin, and discussed the species; new combination by Regan (1904:261); no recent work.
