Etymology: Rhynchocypris: Name from Greek 'rhingcho-' meaning rostral and 'cypris' or 'Kýpris' for the goddess Aphrodite (Peyman and Jalal, 2011).
Eponymy: Petr Petrovich Dementiev (recently deceased at time of the fish’s description) was an ichthyologist who worked in Kyrgystan, which is the type locality. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
