Rather deep-bodied; head length shorter or equal to body depth; body depth less than 4 times in standard length; ventral fin length less than 1.7 times in head length; eye diameter less than 2.2 times in snout length, less than 2 times in interorbital width; silvery or yellowish.

Occurs mainly over rocky substrates, both in shallow and deep water. Mainly piscivore. Smaller specimens also eat considerable amounts of insects (Ref. 35835).
