Etymology: Stenogobius: Greek, stenos = narrow + Latin, gobius = gudgeon (Ref. 45335); squamosus: The name is taken from the Latin word squamosus meaning scaled. This is in reference to the fact that it is the most scaled species of the Stenogobius examined from the Marquesas Is.

Species has most elongate caudal peduncle of all Insularigobius examined, 14-17% of SL, usually 15-16%; predorsal midline usually fully scaled, usually 17-19; scales in horizontal series 49-51, usually 50-51; opercle may or may not be scaled; one to two spots present on caudal peduncle (Ref. 34009).
