Etymology: Opistognathus: Greek, opisthe = behind + Greek, gnathos = jaw (Ref. 45335); to the very elongate upper jaw of the type species of the genus, Opistognathus nigromarginatus (Ref. 128653).
Eponymy: FEN + Mutis is an arbitrary combination of letters in honour of the José Celestino Mutis Fund of the National Electric Finance Company (FEN, Bogotá), a patron of natural sciences in Colombia which financed the senior author’s studies. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

D 13, A III; 102-105 oblique scale rows in longitudinal series; 68-73 pored lateral line scales; 26-30 gill rakers on lower limb of first arch; entire length of body with 3 violet parallel lines observed on the Colombian specimens (no spotting or other markings on head or body of Costa Rican specimen except for a series of small dark spots along the distal margin
of dorsal fin); 16 caudal vertebrae (Ref. 75633).
