Etymology: Nannostomus: Latin, nannus = small + Greek, stoma = mouth (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: Martin Mortenthaler (1961–2018) was an Austrian fish exporter and the owner of Aquarium Rio Momon, Iquitos, Peru. He collected the holotype. (See also Martin (Mortenthaler)) (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
