> Anabantiformes (Gouramies, snakeheads) > Osphronemidae (Gouramies) > Macropodusinae
Etymology: Betta: Malay/Javanese origin. Bleeker (1850, 1858) indicates Ikan Wadder Bettah as the local name of Betta trifasciata Bleeker, 1849 (now Betta picta, Valenciennes, 1846) in the Ambarawa Javanese dialect. Ikan Wader is a common Javanese name for smaller freshwater fishes, especially cyprinids (already used in Old Javanese). See Blust, R. & Trussel, S. Austronesian Comparative Dictionary. Web Edition (https://www.trussel2.com/acd/)compuncta: From Latin word 'compuncta', feminine past participle of the Latin verb 'compungere', to prick, to puncture, hence the verb 'notis compungere', to brand, to tattoo, referring to the distinct black pattern on the body, usually in females; as adjective.

Biologie     Glossaire (ex. epibenthic)

Facultative air-breathing (Ref. 126274); Inhabits mainly slow flowing small streams in swampy areas of the heath forest, although it can also be found in faster flowing larger tributaries (Ref. 57022). Occurs in these habitats with very acidic waters due to the presence of subterranean and surface coal (Ref. 57022).
