Duri punggung (Keseluruhan (total)) : 6 - 8; duri punggung lunak (Keseluruhan (total)) : 6 - 9; Duri dubur: 1; Sirip dubur lunak: 6 - 8; vertebrata, bertulang belakang: 28. Distinguished from its congeners by the following characters: second dorsal, I, 6-9 (modally 8); anal fin I, 6-8 (modally 7); pectoral fin 14-16 (modally 15-16); longitudinal scale rows 28-30 (modally 31-32); vertebral count modally 28, and coloration pattern: cheek usually with 1 oblique grayish brown stripe in male; pectoral fin base with 2 distinct blackish-brown spots; branchiostegal membranes with 22-28 small orange-red spots in male (light grayish when preserved); caudal fin with 4-6 rows of vertical deep brown lines or spots (Ref. 57935).
