Etymology: mannusella: Name from Latin 'mannus' meaning pony, the common name for the family, and 'sella' meaning saddle, refers to the shape of the nuchal marking.

This species in distinguished from its congeners by the following characters: a conspicuously deep lower jaw with a strongly concave profile, sharply pointed ventrally (vs. slightly concave or straight lower jaw profile); black dorsal-fin marking is restricted to the anterior edge of the fin, with some scattered melanophores in the dorsal-fin membrane (vs. a large blotch over a larger area on the dorsal fin or an no markings) (Ref. 75067).
