Etymology: Nannostomus: Latin, nannus = small + Greek, stoma = mouth (Ref. 45335)grandis: The species is named after its maximum length. With over 46 mm SL, this is the largest known Nannosomus article. From grandis, meaning "large".

Similar to Nannostomus beckfordi but it can be distinguished by having a more elongated body, body depth 4.66-5.35 times in SL (vs. 4.3-5.0 times in SL), head length 4.46 [4.39-4.50] vs. 3. 8 [3.5 to 4.0] times in SL, larger body size, maximum length 46.2 mm SL (vs. max. 35.0 mm SL), and completely different coloration in life (e.g. ventral-fins colorless in Nannostomus grandis vs. with milky white tips in Nannostomus beckfordi) (Ref. 88928).
