Indo-West Pacific: Three isolated populations: 1) southern Japan, Ryukyu Islands, and Taiwan; 2) Coral Sea including New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji and eastern Australia; 3) Mauritius and Réunion in the western Indian Ocean. Has been photographed at Leadsman Shoal (Ref. 11228); also known from the Philippines.

Adults inhabit outer coral or rocky reefs. They usually form large aggregations in shallow waters e.g. in lagoons; feeding well above the bottom on zooplankton (Ref. 2334). Diurnal species (Ref. 54980; 113699). Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205). Eggs are demersal and adhere to the substrate (Ref. 205). Males guard and aerate the eggs (Ref. 205).
