Etymology: Thoracochromis: Greek, thorax, -akos = cuiras, shell + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: Peter J Buys is a South African taxidermist, herpetologist and ornithologist who was Curator, National Museum of Namibia (1957–1987). He co-wrote: Snakes of Namibia (1983). He collected the first specimen of the hap. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Africa: Kunene river in Namibia (Ref. 52307, 52863) and Angola (Ref. 52307). Also present in the Cuvelai system in Namibia (Ref. 33857, 52863), but this is unconfirmed in Ref. 120641 which considers the species to be a Cunene River endemic.
