Etymology: Eviota: No etymology given, suggested by Christopher Scharpt: from Latin 'eu' for 'true' and 'iota' for anything very small, in combination 'truly very small' referring to it as being the smallest vertebrate at the time it has benn described by Jenkins (thus, making the suggestion by Scharpt plausible; lacrimosa: Name from Latin 'lacrimosa' meaning tearful or weeping; both scientific and common names refer to the bar below the eye, which is reminiscent of a tear; noun in apposition.

Dorsal spines (total): 7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 8; Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 7 - 8. This species is characterized by the following set of characters: sensory pore pattern group 2, with only IT pore missing; dorsal/anal ray formula 8/8; some pectoral-fin rays are branched; fifth pelvic-fin ray 1/10-2/10 length of fourth pelvic fin ray; distinct dark vertical stripe on cheek extending ventrally from middle of eye to under lower jaw; urogenital papilla not fimbriate (Ref. 94084).
Collected on small coral bommie on sandy slope (Ref. 94084).
