Etymology: Paracobitis: Greek, para = the side of + Greek, kobitis, -idos = a kind of sardine; also related with the voice Greek, kobios, Latin gobius = gudgeon (Ref. 45335); zabgawraensis: Named for the Great Zab River, the Zab Gawra in Kurdish language. An adjective.

This species differs from other epigean congeners in the Middle East by its origin of dorsal fin above the origin of pelvic fin (vs. behind) and almost plain brown with a yellowish narrow reticulate color pattern (vs. mottled or marbled, with a midlateral stripe or with large brown blotches) (Ref. 97574).
