Ραχιαίες άκανθες (συνολικά) : 0; Μαλακές ραχιαίες ακτίνες (συνολικά) : 7; Εδρικές άκανθες: 0; Μαλακές εδρικές ακτίνες: 8 - 10. Diagnosis: Amphilius frieli is diagnosed from all other species of the Amphilius jacksonii complex by having more gill rakers on the first gill arch, 10-11, rarely 9 or 12 vs. 6-9, rarely 5 or 10 (Ref. 103388). It is further diagnosed from A. jacksonii by its deeper caudal peduncle, caudal peduncle depth 9.7-11.4% of standard length vs. 4.8-7.9%, shorter caudal peduncle, caudal peduncle 14.4-16.4% of standard length vs. 16.7-20.6%, and less slender body, body depth at anus 13.9-14.9% of standard length vs. 9.6-13.2%; it is further diagnosed from A. ruziziensis by having more branchiostegal rays, 8-9 vs. 6-7, a deeper caudal peduncle, caudal peduncle depth 9.7-11.4% of standard length vs. 8.6-9.5%, shorter caudal peduncle, caudal peduncle 14.4-16.4% of standard length vs. 18.7-20.3%, and less slender body depth, body depth at anus 13.9-14.9% of standard length vs. 11.1-12.9%; it is further diagnosed from A. pedunculus, A. crassus, and A. lujani by its narrower interorbital width, 25.1-27.7% of head length vs. 28.1-35.8%, and from A. crassus by having more branchiostegal rays, 8-9 vs. 6-8, more branched pectoral-fin rays, 9-10 vs. 7-9, and a shorter dorsal-fin insertion to adipose-fin insertion length, 37.5-41.2% of standard length vs. 42.2-44.6%; it is further diagnosed from A. lujani by its deeper caudal peduncle, caudal peduncle depth 9.7-11.4% of standard length vs. 8.1-9.5%, and shorter caudal peduncle, caudal peduncle 14.4-16.4% of standard length vs. 16.8-20.9% (Ref. 103388).
