Etymology: Astyanax: The name of Astyanax, Hector´s son in the Greek mythology (Ref. 45335); rioverde: Named for its type locality, ditch south of Rioverde in San Luis Potosí, Mexico. A noun in apposition.

Astyanax rioverde is distinguished from its congeners in central-northern Mexico by having the following characters: scales around caudal peduncle, modally 16.5 (vs. fewer); body deeper, mean 37% SL (vs. mean 34% SL in A. argentatus); interorbital, mean 9-10% SL (vs. mean 8% SL in A. tehuacanensis); maxillary 10.2% SL or shorter, mean 9.5% (vs. 10.1% SL or longer, mean 11.1% in A. argentatus); base of anal fin, 24% SL or shorter (vs. 23% SL or longer in A. argentatus); anterior fontanel short (vs. longer in A. mexicanus and A. tehuacanensis), convex-sided (vs. straight-sided in A. acatlanensis, A. mexicanus and A. tehuacanensis), sharp-tipped (vs. blunt in A acatlanensis and A. mexicanus); infraorbital II, triangular with an angled base (vs. base convex in A. acatlanensis, A. argentatus and A. mexicanus); first dorsal pterygiophore, rostral edge, angled (vs. curved in A. argentatus and A. mexicanus); and humeral spot oval (vs. triangular-rectangular) (Ref. 118583).
