Found in various habitats and dams; feeds on insects, snails and plants; breeds in spring and early summer; males construct a sand-scrape nest in shallow water (Ref. 7248). Agamous, ovophilic (Ref. 52307) maternal mouthbrooder (Ref. 7248, 52307). Females mouthbrood eggs and larvae (Ref. 7248).
