Etymology: Owstonia: Named for Alan Owston (1853‒1915), an amateur naturalist, yachtsman and collector of Asian wildlife, notably fishes from Japan and Chinaaurora: Named for the 'Aurora 2007' Philippine Expedition, a project under the Census of Philippine Deep-Sea Biodiversity.

This species is distinguished by the following set of characters: D III, 21; A I,14; gill rakers on first arch 35-38; scales on cheek 80-86 in 7-8 rows; lateral line unbranched, not forming loop in front of dorsal fin, and ending below 17th-22nd dorsal-fin soft rays; oblique body scales rows in mid-lateral series 54-58; lower margin of the preopercles rounded; a prominent black blotch on anterior dorsalfin membrane, which extend downward to dorsal-fin base, the remaining membrane of dorsal, anal, and caudal fins are red with white margins and bases, distinct white stripes on mid dorsal and caudal fin membranes; membranes between the maxillary and premaxillary with discontinuous black stripes or patches (Ref. 127466).
