Etymology: Pseudobunocephalus: The generic name is a combination of the Greek word pseudes, meaning false or deceptive, plus the aspredinid genus Bunocephalus. It alludes to the fact that members of this genus have previously been mistaken for juveniles of other species.; timbira: Species name refers to the Timbira people, an indigenous groups in south of Maranhão, east of Pará and north of Tocantins (Ref. 120442).

Inhabits small and slow flowing streams and rivers running over sand or muddy bottom, with moderate and submerged vegetation (Ref. 120442).
