Etymology: Iniistius: Latin, in = in + Greek, istion = sailbakunawa: Species epithet named after 'Bakunawa', a serpentine figure in Visayan mythology believed to have caused an eclipse by devouring the moon (Ref. 129132).

This species can be distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: 7 horizontal rows of scales on cheek; GR: 4-6 + 8-11 = 12-17; gill rakers short, bearing teeth; and tubed lateral line scales 23-26; 2 scales dorsoanteriorly on opercle. Colouration: Head and body pale yellowish to jade green with a large black and white concentric ellipsoid ocellus on the posteriormost edge of its dorsal fin.
