This species is distinguished by the following characters: body short and deep, short weakly notched caudal fin with slightly uneven lobes; relatively large head and eyes; low dorsal crest; caudal fin slightly notched, with upper lobe slightly longer than lower; uniformly sized lateral teeth in jaws; usually D2 and A usually with 24 elements; gill rakers 19-23; filamentous rays in ID; pointed anterior processes of pelvis (Ref. 129456).
