Etymology: amblyrhynchos: Name from Greek words 'ambly' for dull or blunt and 'rhynchos' for snout; referring to its blunt snout, distinguishing it from M. chalmersi.

Espinas dorsales (total) : 8 - 9; Radios blandos dorsales (total) : 9 - 10; Espinas anales: 1; Radios blandos anales: 8 - 9; Vértebra: 34. This species is distinguished by the following character states: snout blunt, snout length/ head length ratio 0.26-0.28, mean 0.27; eye large, but not protruding outward, interorbital width larger than eye diameter, interorbital width/head length ratio 0.22-0.27, mean 0.25 (Ref. 131453).

Found in small creeks or rivers with slow moving, clear water and rocky bottom. Some remains of chitin exoskeleton of crustaceans were found in the anus opening of the holotype, suggesting that this species is carnivorous. During their spawning seasons, the male’s head would turn black with several orange dots on the body sides (Ref. 131453).
