Etymology: Amamiichthys: The name reflects the extremely limited distribution of the type species, which is known only from Amami-oshima Island, Ryukyu Islands, Japan.

Spine dorsali (totale) : 12; Raggi dorsali molli (totale) : 10; Spine anali: 3; Raggi anali molli: 8; Vertebre: 24. Distinguished by the following set of characters: D XII,10, with the first and second dorsal-fin spines very short and the third and fourth (usually) dorsal-fin spines extremely elongated and filamentous; A III, 8; 56-61 pored lateral-line scales; absence of scales on preopercular flange; colour of head and body uniformly pinkish, with upper body having small distinct blue spots (sometimes overlapping pairs); without black margin on caudal fin (Ref. 104925).
