Etymology: Fundulopanchax: Latin, fundus = bottom; a peculiar name for a topminnow, coined for a bottom species of Atlantic coast being "the abode of the fundulus mudfish" + Greek, soma = body.

Africa: origin unknown, but thought to originate from the border area between Nigeria (Calabar) and Cameroon (Mamfe); concluded from the fact that it was imported together with Fundulopanchax ndianus, which inhabits that area (Ref. 47774, 56193).
