Etymology: Gymnorhamphichthys: Greek, gymnos = naked + Greek. Rhamphos = beak, bill + Greek, ichthys = fish (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: Though this looks like an eponym, it is in fact a toponym; a place on the upper Rio Negro, Brazil, where the holotype of this species was collected. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
