Etymology: Notropis: A misnomer given by Rafinesque to shriveled specimens, with the meaning of "back keel"; from Greek, noton = back (Ref. 45335)grandis: The specific name grandis, refers to the larger size of this species relative to the other members of the N. calientis complex.

पृष्ठीय रीढ़ (सम्पूर्ण) : 2; पृष्ठीय सौफट रेज़ (सम्पूर्ण) : 7 - 9; गुदा कांटा: 1 - 2; ऐनल सौफट रेज़: 6 - 7. Can be distinguished by the following combination of characters: anal fin with 6 branched rays, rarely 7; scales in a lateral series 42, rarely 40-41, or 43-45; 10-11 gill rakers in the first arch; a dark lateral stripe widens from approximately the pectoral fin origin to the dorsal fin origin, forming a slightly convex segment (Ref. 84762).
